What is an Allergy blood test?
Allergies occur when your body’s immune system reacts to something, such as food, pollen, medication or chemicals and mistakes it for something harmful. Allergies can be mild, but they can also be severe and rarely cause anaphylaxis. Anaphylaxis is a life-threatening allergic reaction. It is a medical emergency and requires immediate treatment.
Allergy testing can help you understand your allergy and how it may affect your body. When your body reacts to potential allergens, such as certain foods or chemicals, IgE antibodies are produced, serving as markers of an allergic response. The severity of your reaction typically depends on both the level of exposure to allergens and your genetic predisposition.
An allergy blood test measures levels of IgE antibodies in your blood, and can also identify common allergens and indicate triggers.
At Welbeck, allergy blood tests are performed by our experienced allergists in our dedicated Allergy centre.
