A private GP, or general practitioner, is a healthcare professional who provides primary medical care outside the NHS. You can book an appointment with them directly, with no referral needed, for support for new symptoms, ongoing concerns, and preventative health. They can also provide referrals to private specialists if necessary. 

What does a private GP do?

A private GP offers timely, unhurried appointments with a focus on personalised, continuous care. 

During an appointment, a private GP can:

• assess and manage common symptoms and long-term conditions

• prescribe medicines when appropriate, including repeat prescriptions, acute treatments, and ongoing medication reviews

• arrange blood tests, imaging, and private referrals

• provide fit notes and letters where suitable

• deliver preventive care, such as vaccinations and general health checks

How do private GP appointments work?

You don’t need to have a referral to book a private GP appointment, and they can be held either virtually or in person. 

Private appointments are typically longer than those available on the NHS, and many private GPs also offer same-day, next-day, or evening availability, allowing for faster and more personalised and effective care. 

To make the most of your appointment, it can be helpful to bring:

• a list of your current medications

• a summary of your medical history

• copies of any previous medical letters or test results

Your GP will explain how any test results will be shared, how follow-up appointments work, and when to expect any updates.
