Blood Tests and Pathology
Blood and pathology tests are a vital part of detecting, diagnosing, and treating conditions.
Welbeck’s paediatric imaging and diagnostics service provides specialist assessment and diagnostic support for young people aged 3+. Our expert radiologists and clinical imaging teams use advanced technology to provide accurate answers, guide treatment, and support clinical decisions in a calm, child-friendly environment.

At Welbeck, we recognise that children may feel anxious about tests and procedures. Our radiologists and imaging specialists focus on gentle communication and careful explanation to help them feel at ease throughout the process. We use advanced on-site diagnostic technology to gather high-quality information quickly, so clinical teams can make informed decisions about your child’s care. We also work closely with paediatric clinicians across specialties to ensure joined-up care from first referral through results and treatment planning.
Our paediatric imaging and diagnostics team supports clinical investigation across a broad range of symptoms, including persistent pain, unexplained swelling, trauma following injury, and recurrent infections.
We offer a full range of paediatric imaging and diagnostic techniques, including X-ray, high-resolution ultrasound, CT, and MRI*. Where recommended, we also support image-guided procedures. All tests are carried out using child-appropriate protocols to minimise discomfort and exposure by clinical teams trained in paediatric care. *Age ranges vary for some tests, such as MRI, which is available to children aged 7+. Please contact the centre directly for more information.

Blood and pathology tests are a vital part of detecting, diagnosing, and treating conditions.

An MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) scan uses a magnetic field and radio waves to take images of the inside of your body.

An X-ray is a type of imaging test that uses radiation to produce images of the body.

CT (computed tomography) is a specialised imaging test that uses X-ray beams to create detailed cross-sectional pictures of the body.

A DEXA scan is a simple, painless test that measures your bone density and helps assess your risk of osteoporosis – a condition that weakens bones and makes them more likely to break.

Our highly skilled radiologists and consultants perform a broad range of ultrasound scans within our modern facilities, enabling accurate diagnosis and treatment for issues involving organs, tissues, and blood flow. At Welbeck, we’re committed to ensuring the referral process is smooth and efficient. We welcome referrals from GPs and other healthcare professionals and aim to offer same-day or next-day appointments where possible.

If your child is having blood tests, you can stay with them throughout. Your child can also sit on your lap if this helps them feel more comfortable.
If your child is having an imaging test, like an X-ray or MRI, the radiographer will advise on the safety measures required. It’s not always possible for you to stay with your child for these types of tests. If you’re unsure, please contact the centre ahead of time for information.
If a cannula is required to properly perform a test, we’ll make that you’re made aware of this ahead of time. A numbing cream called EMLA cream can be applied before cannula insertion – please arrive 1 hour early if this is required. We may also use freeze spray for those over 12 years of age.
