About Dominic Blunt
Dr Dominic Blunt is a Consultant Radiologist specialising in gastrointestinal and abdominopelvic imaging.
He is currently the Chair of the radiology NHS Bowel Cancer Screening Clinical Program Group.
Dr Blunt is the lead for gastrointestinal imaging within Imperial NHS trust, incorporating St. Mary’s, Charing Cross and The Hammersmith hospitals.
Dominic has a keen interest in the training of junior radiologists. He has been involved in quality assurance of colon CT scanning for the national screening program as well as for the UK special interest group in GI radiology.
He works on committees for the Royal College of Radiologists in assessing candidates for specialist registration in the UK and on Professional Standards; contributing to policies defining radiology good practice.
His current research interests involve techniques for assessing the gut microbiome supporting Imperial College metabolic medicine academics.
Personal Biography
After graduating in London and then 3 years training in general medicine, passing the Membership of the Royal College of Physicians, Dominic undertook his initial radiology training in London.
He transferred to Leeds for sub-speciality training in gastrointestinal imaging at the Leeds General Infirmary and St James’ University Hospital. While there he was part of the research team involved in rectal cancer imaging and MRI.
After consultant posts in Christchurch, New Zealand and a return to the UK working at The Royal Free Hospital and The Royal Marsden he was appointed to his current Consultant post in 2000.
He set up services in his NHS trust for almost all emerging modalities of gastrointestinal imaging, including pelvic and small intestinal MRI scanning, and CT colonography and has built up a strong team. He reviews papers for national and international journals and is the Imperial Trust radiology lead for colorectal cancer as well as contributing to upper GI, inflammatory bowel disease and acute surgery multidisciplinary meetings.
He ran the largest training program in London for many years and continues to play an active role in training, and supporting research projects within Imperial College, as well as continuing as lead for gastrointestinal imaging.
He chaired the NHS Bowel Cancer Screening Program radiology group since 2015, and has championed the quality assurance processes for colon CT scanning and contributes to national guidelines for the British Society of Gastrointestinal and Abdominal Radiology
He is a regular lecturer, on topics such as barium assessment of swallowing disorders, in head and neck cancer and after weight loss (bariatric) surgery.

Currently involved in research projects investigating gut microbiome and its relationship to gut absorption and hunger mechanisms, as well as radiology lead for numerous national and international cancer trial studies which use imaging to monitor treatment and contributes to multi-site imaging research.
