What is ambulatory blood pressure monitoring?
Ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM) is a safe, simple and effective test that measures your blood pressure at regular intervals over 24 hours, while you continue with your normal daily life.
Compared to a normal one-off blood pressure check, this method of measuring blood pressure gives your consultant cardiologist a more comprehensive and clearer understanding of how it changes throughout the day.
A consultant may recommend you have 24-hour monitoring to check:
if your blood pressure is only elevated when in a clinical setting (this may be due to feeling nervous)
whether the medication you’re taking is working as it should
if your blood pressure remains high during the night
At Welbeck, ambulatory blood pressure monitoring is managed by our leading cardiologists in our dedicated Heart Health centre.
More information
Ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM) involves wearing a small, portable blood pressure cuff and monitor for 24 hours.
During your appointment, you’ll be seen by our team to have the cuff and a small recording device fitted, which you wear on your arm and waist. The device automatically inflates the cuff after every 30 to 60 minutes to take a blood pressure reading. To get accurate results, you’ll need to keep the monitor on while you sleep.
When the monitor is about to take a reading, it will beep. For the most reliable reading, you should:
sit down if possible
keep the cuff at the level of your heart
hold your arm still
Ambulatory blood pressure monitoring is a very safe test, with no associated complications. Some people may experience minor side effects, including:
mild discomfort or irritation from the cuff
slight soreness or bruising on the arm
disturbed sleep when the cuff inflates at night
Other than attending a consultation to have the monitor fitted, there is no preparation required.
There’s no recovery or aftercare needed. After your 24-hour blood pressure monitoring, simply return the device – your consultant will review the results with you.
For self-paying patients, ambulatory blood pressure monitoring costs £565.

Frequently asked questions
No, but you may feel mild discomfort when the cuff inflates and squeezes your arm.
Sit down, if possible, keep the cuff level with your heart, and hold your arm still so the reading is accurate.
No, the monitor must not get wet. Please avoid showering, bathing, or swimming during the 24-hour period. We recommend bathing just after a measurement has been taken, so that no recordings are missed.
Apart from following the instructions when the monitor beeps (sitting still, keeping your arm level with your heart), you can carry on with your normal daily activities.
