What is urodynamics testing?
Urodynamics is a test used to evaluate the bladder function. This will include tests which evaluate how well your bladder, sphincter, and urethra store and release urine. If you’re experiencing some of the symptoms listed below, your doctor may recommend that you have a urodynamic test.
The symptoms your doctor may look out for when they advise a urodynamic test may include:
urge incontinence or urine leakage
recurring urinary tract infections (UTIs)
frequent urination
problems emptying the bladder completely
painful urination
sudden, strong urges to urinate
problems starting a urine stream
The results of the urodynamic test help identify the cause and type of problems affecting your lower urinary tract.
At Welbeck, the urodynamic test is performed by our urological consultants and consultant gynaecologists in the Men`s and Women’s Health Centre.
More information
A urodynamic test is a minimally invasive assessment that measures how well your bladder and urethra are storing and releasing urine.
The test includes:
uroflowmetry – this test measures the speed and volume of your urine flow
post-void residual test – this test checks how much urine remains in your bladder after urination
cystometric test– this test measures bladder pressure as it fills with fluid
pressure flow study – this test evaluates bladder pressure and flow while you urinate
Your consultant will explain the test and exactly what’s involved, so you feel prepared.
The urodynamic test is safe, but as with any medical procedure, there are some small risks, which include:
temporary mild discomfort
urinary tract infections (UTI)
minor bleeding
To prepare for a urodynamic test, you’ll be asked to arrive with a comfortably full bladder, wear loose clothing, and continue taking most regular medications unless advised otherwise by your consultant. Your care team will give you specific instructions if anything special is required.
You may experience mild discomfort after a urodynamics test. To ease this, it’s recommended that you drink plenty of fluids for 24 to 48 hours, which can also help lower the risk of a urinary infection. In some cases, your consultant may prescribe antibiotics as an extra precaution.
