What is skin tag removal?
Skin tags are harmless, non-cancerous skin growths that hang off the skin. They may be the same colour as your skin, or slightly darker and can vary in size, with some growing to be quite large.
They’re very common and easy to remove. They often appear in areas where skin rubs together, such as the neck, under the arms, eyelids, under the breasts, and around the anus.
The exact cause of skin tags is unknown, but certain factors may increase your risk, including type 2 diabetes, age, being overweight, and wearing tight clothing that causes friction in skin folds.
At Welbeck, our expert dermatologists use advanced techniques to remove skin tags safely and effectively. We offer removal via cryotherapy or surgery, ensuring complete elimination, though recurrence is rare. Skin tags can be treated anywhere on the body, including the eyelids and anal area, with treatment tailored to the size and location for optimal results
While skin tags are usually harmless, there are several reasons you might choose to have them removed, including:
the tag being visible or growing
reduced self-confidence due to the skin tag
skin tags catching on clothing or jewellery
irritation, bleeding, or pain
impaired vision from a skin tag on the eyelid
Skin tag removal is generally considered cosmetic and is not routinely offered on the NHS, though some GP services may provide it. Private treatment at Welbeck allows you to safely remove skin tags and improve both your physical comfort and emotional wellbeing.

More information
At Welbeck, our consultant dermatologists remove skin tags in our state-of-the art Skin Health centre, by cryotherapy or surgery. These techniques remove your skin tag completely, but there is a small chance of it coming back.
Our consultants can remove skin tags anywhere on your body, including eyelid and anal skin tags. We’ll tailor your treatment based on your skin tag’s location and size to ensure the results exceed your expectations.
Cryotherapy freezes your skin tag with liquid nitrogen to form a scab. The scab will fall off and your skin tag will be gone over a few weeks. Cryotherapy is simple, quick and over in minutes – making it ideal for those wanting multiple skin tags removed at once.
Surgical excision is another option for skin tag removal. In surgical skin tag removal, the area is made numb using a topical anaesthetic. A scalpel is then used to cut off the skin tag and the wound is cauterised (sealed using heat) to stop the bleeding. Small stitches may need to be used in cases where larger skin tags are removed.
In the case of anal skin tag removal, the procedure is carried out under general anaesthesia. Your surgeon will remove the anal skin tags and inject the area with a local anaesthetic to keep it numb after surgery. You’ll need to take laxatives (stool softeners) after anal skin tag removal to prevent your wounds from reopening during your initial healing. Your wounds are normally left open, but they should heal within a few weeks.
Skin tag removal is quick, straightforward, and carries minimal risks. While changes in skin pigmentation or scarring are possible, especially for larger tags removed surgically, our modern techniques minimise these risks. Recurrence is rare, and our advanced treatments ensure fast recovery, low side effects, and excellent results.
At Welbeck, our expert dermatologists provide full support from consultation to recovery, helping you safely and effectively remove unwanted skin tags and restore your confidence.
In most cases, no preparation is needed for skin tag removal.
Your dermatologist will find out more about your medical history before your skin tag removal. They’ll want to know if you have a bleeding disorder, have experienced heavy bleeding after procedures in the past, or take any medications that thin your blood. Your answers will inform whether you need to do anything different in the run-up to your procedure.
Recovering from skin tag removal is straightforward – you can go home on the same day as your procedure. However, you must keep the area clean to minimise the risk of infection.
Do not pick the scab if we remove your skin tag with cryotherapy. Let it heal naturally, and it will fall off within 2 weeks. If we removed it surgically and used stitches, you may need a follow-up appointment to remove them. However, this step might not be necessary if we used dissolvable stitches.
Your dermatologist will provide all the information you need about caring for your skin tag removal wound to support your recovery and enhance your results.
There’s little chance of your skin tag returning once it has been removed. Our advanced removal treatments offer a low risk of side effects, fast recovery and excellent results.
At Welbeck, our committed team of dermatologists will provide all the support you need from your first consultation to recovery and beyond. We’re here to help you safely and effectively remove unwanted skin tags so you can regain your confidence.
