What is a rigid sigmoidoscopy?
A rigid sigmoidoscopy, also called a proctoscopy, is a procedure performed by a general or colorectal surgeon to examine the rectum (the end of the large intestine) and anus (the opening of the rectum).
A rigid sigmoidoscope is a hollow plastic tube with a tiny light at the end. The diagnostic procedure may be used to:
detect disease in the rectum or anus
find the source of anal bleeding
find the cause of diarrhoea or constipation
remove or monitor the development of existing polyps or growths
screen for colon cancer or monitor rectal cancer that has already been treated
At Welbeck, our world-class consultants carry out rigid sigmoidoscopy as an outpatient procedure in our state-of-the-art Digestive Health centre. They use the latest medical technology to ensure this is a minimally invasive procedure so that you can return home the same day.
More information
A rigid sigmoidoscopy isn’t usually an uncomfortable procedure, so it doesn’t require anaesthetic or sedation.
During the procedure:
you’ll be asked to lie on your side with your knees bent
the rigid sigmoidoscope will be slowly and gently inserted into the rectum
gas may be pumped into the rectum to improve visibility
you may have a feeling of having a full bowel or mild abdominal cramping
our nursing team will help to make the procedure as comfortable as possible and advise you on techniques to relax, such as taking slow, deep breaths
once the procedure is complete, the rigid sigmoidoscope will be gently removed
The procedure will take only a few minutes to complete, and your consultant will be able to talk to you about what they’ve seen and any recommended next steps. You’ll be able to go home and return to your normal activities straight away after the procedure.
A rigid sigmoidoscopy is a very safe procedure. Complications are extremely rare when carried out by experienced specialists. You may experience minor rectal bleeding or abdominal cramping, but these are usually short-lived.
You should contact your specialist if you notice:
severe abdominal pain
fever or chills
bleeding of more than half a cup
bleeding that continues for more than a few days
At Welbeck, you’ll have a consultation with a colorectal surgeon before having your procedure. They’ll take you through what’s involved, how to prepare, and answer any questions you may have. Your consultant will also talk to you about any medications you’re currently taking, as well as any medical conditions you have.
In most cases, little preparation is needed. It can be useful to try to have a bowel movement before the procedure, and sometimes a small enema is given to clear the lower bowel so your specialist can get a clear view. You can usually eat and drink as normal on the day.
At Welbeck, a rigid sigmoidoscopy is performed on an outpatient basis, so you can go home or return to work immediately after having the procedure.
You may notice some minor rectal bleeding and irritation. This is completely normal and should only last a day or 2.

Frequently asked questions
A rigid sigmoidoscopy is used when your specialist needs to examine only the rectum and anus. Because the scope is shorter, the test is quick and comfortable and doesn’t require preparation or a sedative. Flexible sigmoidoscopy and colonoscopy allow a view further up the bowel but require more extensive preparation of the bowel and sometimes the use of a sedative. At Welbeck, we aim for the right balance between diagnostic accuracy and patient comfort, and we will advise which test is most suitable for you.
If your consultant sees anything unusual, they’ll discuss this with you on the day of your appointment. They may take a small tissue sample (biopsy) or recommend further tests. Your consultant will let you know when they’ll be in touch with any results and any other necessary next steps.
Yes, it’s fine to have the procedure during your period, but you can also rearrange it if you prefer not to.
Yes, the procedure doesn’t need any sedative, so you can drive home and return to your normal activities straight away.
