What is a nasoendoscopy?
A nasoendoscopy involves passing a thin, flexible tube with a camera and/or light on the end, an endoscope, through one of your nostrils to examine the inside and back of your nose, the back of your throat, your voice box and tongue.
It may be suggested that you have a nasoendoscopy if you’re experiencing issues or symptoms affecting your ears, nose, throat or voice box.
At Welbeck, a nasoendoscopy is performed by our experienced ENT specialists in our state-of-the-art Ear, Nose & Throat centre.
Paediatrics
We offer appointments to paediatric patients aged 0 to 18. For full information on our paediatrics service, please visit our main Paediatrics page.
More information
Overall, a nasoendoscopy only takes a few minutes and can be done with or without a local anaesthetic. If anaesthetic is used, it will be administered 10 minutes before the procedure.
Your consultant will gently pass the endoscope into your nose, and depending on the area being examined, they may guide the endoscope towards the back of your tongue and throat.
You’ll be able to breathe in and out through your nose and mouth throughout the procedure. You may be asked to swallow, breathe through your nose, say some words or make noises, or puff out your cheeks to assist with diagnosis.
The test is very safe, and serious complications are extremely rare. You may have some slight discomfort in the nose, a sensation of something in your throat, your eyes may water, or you may be triggered to cough. On some occasions, you may experience a nosebleed after an endoscopy.
Little preparation is needed. You can eat, drink, and take your medicines as normal before the test.
Most people can return to normal activities straight away. If a local anaesthetic was used, it may take up to an hour for your nose and throat to regain normal feeling. During this time, you should not eat or drink until normal sensation has returned.

Frequently asked questions
The consultant may ask you to swallow, speak, make certain sounds, or puff out your cheeks to help with the examination. This can help them to gain a specific view and make an accurate diagnosis.
The risk is extremely low as the endoscope is always cleaned and sterilised between uses, and no incisions are made in the skin.
Often, your consultant can explain what they see during the test, and will deliver your results as well as the next steps for any necessary treatment straight after the test.
