What is a mole check?

A mole check is a simple skin examination that’s carried out by a dermatologist to assess moles and other skin marks or lesions.

During the appointment, the specialist looks at all your skin marks, often using a dermatoscope (a magnifying tool with light) to assess the structure of moles in detail and identify potentially concerning changes.

You can book an appointment if you’re concerned about a particular mole, but a full-body mole check with a dermatologist may be especially helpful if you have certain risk factors, such as:

  • fair skin that burns easily in the sun

  • you live in a sunny climate

  • a family history of skin cancer or abnormal moles

  • you work outdoors

  • you have a medical condition that weakens your immune system

  • a history of sun damage or skin cancer

At Welbeck, mole checks are carried out in our dedicated Skin Health centre by our experienced dermatologists.

If you have many moles, your consultant may recommend mole mapping. We’re proud to offer the most advanced form of mole mapping currently available in the UK. Designed specifically for dermatology, the VECTRA WB360 whole body 3D imaging system captures the entire skin surface in macro-quality resolution with a single capture. The fully integrated software allows us to map and monitor pigmented lesions.

More information

At Welbeck, a mole check appointment begins with a consultation with one of our leading dermatologists. They will begin by reviewing your medical and family history, ask you about your sun exposure, and assess your risk factors for skin cancer.

They will then carefully examine your skin and use a dermatoscope to closely study your moles and identify whether they are healthy or if any require close monitoring or removal.

How often you need your moles checked depends on your risk factors for skin cancer and the types of moles you have. For higher-risk patients, reviews may be recommended every 6 to 12 months, while others may not need regular check-ups at all.

If a mole is deemed suspicious, your consultant will likely arrange to take a biopsy (a sample) or remove the entire mole or lesion and send it for lab analysis. This will indicate whether the mole is benign (harmless), atypical, dysplastic (abnormal), or malignant (cancerous).

Since a mole check is a non-invasive examination, there are no known risks.

Preparation for your mole check is minimal. It may be helpful to wear clothes that are easy to remove and avoid wearing makeup and nail polish to your appointment.

There’s no recovery or aftercare needed. If your consultant recommends mole removal, they will explain what this involves.
