iTind BPH Treatment
iTind is a minimally invasive and clinically proven treatment that provides rapid and effective relief from BPH symptoms.
What is iTind treatment?
iTind (temporary inserted nitinol device) treatment is a minimally invasive and clinically proven procedure that provides rapid and effective relief from the symptoms of benign prostatic hypertrophy.
Benign prostatic enlargement, also referred to as BPH, is a common condition where your prostate (a gland that surrounds your urethra) becomes enlarged, causing symptoms such as difficulty passing urine, needing to pass urine urgently, and increased need to pass urine (especially at night). The condition is particularly common in men over the age of 60. It’s not related to prostate cancer.
iTind is a relatively new treatment that involves implanting a small device into your prostate for 5 to 7 days. The iTind device expands and applies soft pressure, reshaping the tissue and creating a larger channel through which urine can flow. The device is then removed.
The iTind procedure is an ideal alternative to prescription medication or invasive surgery. You should consider iTind if you don’t want to take a pill every day or if you’ve tried medication and were unsatisfied with the results or experienced unpleasant side effects.
The benefits of iTind include:
rapid and effective symptom relief
long-lasting results
immediate return to daily life
no need for a general anaesthetic
no need for a urinary catheter after the procedure (in most cases)
preserved sexual function
no permanent implant resulting from the procedure
At our state-of-the-art Urology centre, our expert urologists are skilled in the most advanced techniques and treatments for BPH, including iTind.
More information
iTind treatment involves 3 stages: the insertion of the device, the implantation stage, and the device removal.
Insertion
Your urologist may give you some sedation or a local anaesthetic to make sure you’re comfortable and pain-free during the procedure.
A thin, flexible tube with a tiny camera is inserted into your urethra (the tube from which urine leaves your body) to determine where to place the iTind device.
Your urologist will then place the iTind device into your prostate.
Once in place, you should be able to pass urine freely, normally without the need for a catheter.
Insertion of the iTind device normally takes around 30 minutes.
Implantation
During the implantation period (5 to 7 days), the device widens and exerts gentle pressure to reshape your prostate, relieve pressure on your urethra and improve urine flow.
Removal
After 5 to 7 days, your urologist will remove the iTind device using a flexible silicone catheter. You can go home after the procedure and return to normal activities as soon as you’re ready.
iTind is a minimally invasive and generally safe procedure, but as with any medical procedure, there’s a small risk of side effects.
Your consultant will explain all the potential side effects of your treatment before your procedure and answer any questions you may have.
Possible side effects include:
mild pain or discomfort, which may be worse when passing urine
needing to pass urine more frequently or urgently
blood in your urine (haematuria)
urinary tract infection (UTI)
inability to pass urine (urinary retention)
Your urologist will tell you everything you need to do to prepare for your iTind treatment.
Tell your consultant about any medical conditions or allergies you have, and any medications you take regularly.
Your consultant will provide instructions for your recovery. They’ll arrange a follow-up appointment with you to remove the iTind device and further appointments to check your progress during your recovery.
After your iTind procedure, you may have some mild pain or discomfort, which may be worse when you pass urine. You may also need to pass urine more urgently and more frequently than usual. Your urine may appear pink or blood-tinged for a few days after your treatment — this is expected, and usually nothing to worry about. If your bleeding is heavy, your pain is getting worse, or you have a fever, contact the clinic immediately.
Take over-the-counter painkillers such as paracetamol if you need to and drink plenty of water.
While your iTind device is in place, you’ll have a thread running from your penis to allow your consultant to remove the device. The thread will be taped to your penis, but please take care not to damage or remove it.
While the device is in place, you should avoid activities that may dislodge it, including:
sexual activity
strenuous exercise
working with any vibrating equipment such as drills or lawnmowers
After 5 to 7 days, you’ll need to return to the clinic to have the iTind device removed.

Frequently asked questions
Most patients will notice an improvement in their symptoms straight away after the device has been removed. Your symptoms should continue to improve over the next 6 to 12 weeks.
There are several alternative treatments for BPH, including lifestyle changes, medication, and surgery. Your consultant will discuss treatment options with you and recommend the best approach based on your individual circumstances.
While iTind is a highly effective treatment for BPH, it may not be suitable for everyone. iTind treatment may not be right for you if you have:
a very large prostate (over 75 grams)
severe BPH symptoms
certain underlying health conditions
an active urinary tract infection (UTI) or bladder stones
If iTind treatment is not appropriate for you, your consultant will recommend an alternative treatment.
The results of iTind treatment are generally long-lasting, and clinical studies suggest that the procedure can provide relief from BPH symptoms for between 4 and 7 years.
