About Joel Mawdsley

Dr Joel Mawdsley is a consultant gastroenterologist at Welbeck, specialising in luminal gastroenterology, endoscopy (having been an accredited Bowel Cancer Screening Colonoscopist) and inflammatory bowel disease.

His NHS practice is based in the internationally respected Inflammatory Bowel Disease Unit at Guys and St Thomas’ NHS trust, where he is joint clinical lead. This role focuses on delivering first class care to his patients with service innovation and research driven practice. Prior to this, he was an Honorary Lecturer at Imperial College and a consultant at West Middlesex University Hospital, where he was training lead for endoscopy. Dr Mawdsley is active in medical education having been invited to take up roles in regional and national educational societies. He is currently president elect of the Gastroenterology Section of the Royal Society of Medicine and a member of the organising committee of the London IBD forum.

In the development of Welbeck, Dr Mawdsley has advised on the implementation of the endoscopy reporting and IT systems to ensure our patients can enjoy seamless wrap-around care with quality assurance against key performance indicators.

Dr Mawdsley undertook his pre-clinical studies at Queens’ College, Cambridge. He graduated with a first class honours degree, becoming a foundation scholar and winning the prestigious Max Bull Prize for Medicine. For his clinical studies he moved to Bart’s and the Royal London medical school where he graduated with distinction in clinical pharmacology and merits in clinical medicine and pharmacology.

As a specialist registrar, he trained on the north west Thames gastroenterology rotation spending periods of training at St Mary’s Hospital, Charing Cross and Hammersmith Hospital, St Mark’s hospital and Chelsea and Westminster Hospital. He returned to the Royal London Hospital between 2003-05 as a clinical research fellow. Here, he completed a Doctorate of Medicine on the role of stress and psychoneuroimmunology in inflammatory bowel disease, publishing several high impact papers on the subject.

In 2007, he took up a consultant’s position at the West Middlesex University Hospital where he was based for 10 years. During this time was clinical lead for Inflammatory Bowel Disease and training lead for endoscopy. In 2017, he moved to his current post as a gastroenterologist with a special interest in IBD and is joint clinical lead for the IBD unit.
